One of the strongest marks of the Oficina Theater is the crossing of languages, the hybridism that transforms the theater into an electronic terreiro, open to new technologies that will be thought and swallowed anthropophagically.

In 1970, the film ‘Prata Palomares’, which has as main characters two guerrillas, was the first cinematographic experience of the Workshop. Then a trip through Brazil was documented in several works on film. It was also at this time that ‘O Rei da Vela’ began filming.

In his years of exile, Zé Celso made films in Portugal and Mozambique. He was awarded documentaries on the Carnation Revolution and Mozambican Independence.

In the 1980s, Oficina began producing videos – the company acquired from filmmaker Fernando Meirelles its first video camera, with U-Matic gauge, which was the first camera with the highest video quality of that time in Brazil. This experience had the participation of the new generation of video-makers that appeared. These videos were instrumental in the tipping and rebuilding of the theater.

Since then language audiovisual is part of the language of Teatro Total, both for inclusion in the shows and for the documentation of the company’s historical processes. The exile, the return with amnesty, the construction of the project of Lina Bo Bardi and Edson Elito, the struggle for landfill, the transformation of the urbanization of the neighborhood of Bixiga, presentations and contact with different publics in Brazil and abroad, whether in Museums, works of art or favelas, all these events were filmed / recorded and are an important document of the country’s theatrical, aesthetic and political history. With this uninterrupted process, to follow the trajectory of the audiovisual process of the company, is to follow the development of this language in Brazil, since, since then, the company has always had in its processes cameras, that were changing as new technologies were developed. The company’s stock is in all the gauges invented to date: U-Matic, VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, BETACAM, ANALOG BETA, BETA DIGITAL, MINI DV, DV and HD (cards) (SUPER 8, 16mm, 35mm) The desire of the company is the conservation, restoration and digitization of the collection to be made available to the public. The production includes documentary material and an important innovation: Kino-actuação – incorporation of the video in the shows and the direct transmission of all sessions of the repertoire of the company in channels in the network. The workshop was the first Brazilian group to broadcast a live play on the internet, ‘Boca de Ouro’, in 2001.

A new character is created and becomes fundamental in all creations: the KINOACTUATOR – the camera man completely incorporated to the staging, from the use of costumes to its presence in the script of the pieces, a kind of centaur-dancer, in the sense of a To be hybrid of species: the actor in fusion with the filmmaker. Many artists have been protagonists since the 1980s in this role: Tadeu Jungle, Edson Elito, Dib Lutf, Fernando Coimbra, Elaine César, Gabriel Fernandes, Cassandra Mello, Joaquim Castro, Igor Marotti, Cafira Zoé and others to come.
